Today in the US stock top 1000
2026-10-16
The latest trading day, each company at its last trade on IEX in the regular session, against the year of trading behind it: the board on the stock indicators page's fourteen in one table, then each market indicator over the year with the trading day before, a week ago and a month ago beside it, what on the board is at an extreme, and the year in charts. The weekly issue reads the same numbers one week at a time, and the stock map is the latest board as a treemap.

The board on its indicators
The stock indicators page's fourteen, one number per company per trading day, read as the value of the middle company among the top 200: on the latest trading day, with the trading day before, a week ago and a month ago beside it, the year to 2026-10-16 as a line, and how the companies split across the indicator's zones that day. A row opens the chart.

The line is the year of trading to 2026-10-16; hovering it gives the year's low and high with their days, and the share of the year's trading days with a lower value than the latest. The zones are the chart's, and their shares are of the companies among the top 200 with a value that day. Each indicator is defined on the about page.
The total
The top 1000's market cap, trading day by trading day over the year.
$78.11T today; $79.08T the day before, $80.02T a week ago, $78.45T a month ago. Higher than on 80% of days this year. The year's low was $63.56T on 2026-03-30 and the high $80.24T on 2026-10-06.
Breadth, 30 days
The share of the board priced higher than 30 trading days earlier, every trading day, a price before an official split divided by its ratio. Above 50 means more companies rising than falling over those six weeks or so; the total can rise on its largest companies alone while breadth stays low.
32% today; 37% the day before, 27% a week ago, 32% a month ago. Over 90 trading days 49% of the board is higher, over a year 60%. Higher than on 13% of days this year. The year's low was 20% on 2026-09-28 and the high 79% on 2026-01-06.
Market correlation
How much the 50 largest companies move together: the correlation of their daily changes, pair by pair, over the last 30 trading days, averaged. Near 1 the market moves as one; lower, companies move on their own.
0.08 today; 0.09 the day before, 0.10 a week ago, 0.07 a month ago. Higher than on 29% of days this year. The year's low was 0.03 on 2026-07-28 and the high 0.29 on 2026-04-14.
Dispersion
How differently the 100 largest companies move from each other: the spread of a trading day's changes across them (a standard deviation, in percentage points), averaged over the last 30 trading days.
2.2% today; 2.1% the day before, 2.1% a week ago, 2.3% a month ago. Higher than on 47% of days this year. The year's low was 1.6% on 2025-12-31 and the high 3.1% on 2026-08-04.
The top 10's share
The 10 largest companies' market cap as a share of the top 1000's: how concentrated the market is. It rises when the largest companies outgrow the rest, and falls when the rest catch up.
36.9% today; 37.1% the day before, 37.4% a week ago, 36.7% a month ago. Higher than on 76% of days this year. The year's low was 33.8% on 2026-06-25 and the high 38.0% on 2025-10-29.

The year, day by day
Each square is one trading day, Monday to Friday: the top 1000's total market cap against the trading day before, green up and red down, full strength at two percent. A weekday without trading is left empty.
The board's total went from $65.87T to $78.11T (▲18.6%). Its high for the year was $80.24T on 2026-10-06; today it sits 2.6% below that. How the companies did
The change over the year of the 966 companies on today's board that had a price on 2025-10-15, the companies the year-ago numbers are taken over, in bins; a price before an official split is divided by its ratio. The bin of the top 1000 as one index is marked.
33 of the 966 lost half or more of their value, and 48 at least doubled. The top 1000 as one index did ▲13.3%, and 426 of the 966 did better.
How the industries did
The same companies grouped by industry, the one the SEC files each under (its SIC code's name), and the change over the year of each industry's middle company. Industries with at least 15 companies. Hover a row for how many of its companies are down.
In 8 of the 12 industries the middle company gained: Biological Products, (No Diagnostic Substances), Semiconductors & Related Devices, Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas, Pharmaceutical Preparations, State Commercial Banks, National Commercial Banks, Fire, Marine & Casualty Insurance and Services-Prepackaged Software. Biological Products, (No Diagnostic Substances) did best (▲64.0%) and Investment Advice worst (▼19.4%). Across all 966 companies, the middle company did ▲9.2%.
Method
A trading day's board is the 1000 largest US-listed companies by market cap at its close: each company at its last trade on IEX in the regular session, not the official closing auction, times the latest share count it reported to the SEC on or before the day; ranks are positions on that board. Every day here is a trading day, the weekends and market holidays left out. Every sentence on the page is written from the numbers by a fixed rule; nothing is edited by hand. Every past day was ranked from that day's own prices and counts, so the year's lines hold the whole board of each day; details on the about page. Wherever prices are compared, a price before an official split is divided by its ratio, so a split is not a fall. The middle company is the median, half the companies above it and half below.
The fourteen indicators are computed as on the stock indicators page, from the trading days alone, and are defined on the about page. The middle company is taken among the top 200 over the companies with a value that day, leaving out only what that page leaves out, any company that moved less than 0.25% a day over the last 30 trading days; a day with fewer than 20 such companies has no value. The zone shares are over the same companies that day.
Each indicator is read on the latest trading day. "The day before", "a week ago" and "a month ago" are the values 1, 5 and 21 trading days back. "Higher than on" counts the trading days in the year with a lower value. An extreme is the highest or lowest value of the last 30, 90 or 252 trading days, a year of trading, the longest that applies, and is left out when those values are all the same. Breadth is each company on the day's board against its own price 30, 90 or 252 trading days earlier, over the companies that had a price then. The correlation index uses the 50 largest companies on the latest day as a fixed set, so the line measures the market and not a changing membership, and a pair counts with at least 20 paired days of returns. Dispersion is over the 100 largest companies on each day, needing at least 20 of them with a return, and its 30-day mean needs at least 15 days. No company is left out of either, as the board holds no funds or pegged prices. The top 10's share is of the 10 largest on each day's board, whichever they are.
A rank counts as an extreme against the 90 trading days before the latest, for companies on the board on at least five of them. An industry counts as an extreme when its middle company's change over 30 trading days is above or below its value at the close of every earlier week of the year, with at least eight such weeks; the industries and the 15-company floor are the ones the year's industry table uses.
Month by month is the board's total on the month's last trading day against its total on the last trading day before the month began, which for the first month lies before the year shown; the current month runs to the latest. Who holds the market splits each day's total by rank alone. The volume is IEX's own trading, a slice of the whole market's, so nothing here is read from it: no trading volume, turnover, or most and least traded.
The change over the year is each company's price on 2025-10-15, 252 trading days before the latest, against the latest; a company below the top 1000 then is priced from its days off the board. "No ranking" means there is no price for the company on 2025-10-15: it wasn't listed yet, had no SEC share count to rank it by, or didn't trade on IEX that day; 33 of the 34 first came onto the board after that date. Companies that left the top 1000 during the year are not in the year-ago numbers or the returns chart, so the full market did worse than these survivor figures. A company IEX didn't trade on a day is missing from that day's board, so in the then-vs-now chart and the entries and exits a company only counts as gone or new when it is missing from seven consecutive trading days at that end of the year, and its rank and price come from the nearest day that lists it. The year's industries are those of the companies in the year-ago numbers, each company in the one the SEC files it under. The top 1000 as one index is the board's own: each trading day, the change of every company on the board the day before, weighted by its market cap, so companies coming and going and share counts changing do not move it.
